Description
Old Master's Hand-Painted Haviland Limoges France "Wild Yellow Roses in the Mist" w/ Original Solid Walnut Frame- Fine Art w/ Exquisite Detail & ClarityAntiques:Chargers,Trays:Ceramic, Porcelain (click picture for more detail) ‘When I get the wind blowing through the petals, then I will have painted a rose’- George Leykauf Although it is impossible to say who might have hand painted this magnificent unsigned Haviland Charger, experts that I have consulted feel that it is done in the old style and was probably painted by one of the Master artist’s of the late19th century, or perhaps by a student with input from a professional teacher. Well-known Master Artists of this era were very protective of their work and designs. No students were allowed to sign their work in class if it resembled the "Master’s” artwork, especially if they were directly helped by the instructor. In the book 'Classic Gems of Educational Art Treasures Volume Five- George Ferninand Gustave Leykauf’, it states specifically that Leykauf did not tolerate student’s work leaving his studio that was inferior, and that is why so much of his work was seen on student pieces. Leykauf was quoted in saying "I went to the Mid-Winter fair and found china exhibits. Most everything was painted by me and some was painted by Bischoff too. So you can see how people can cheat". That certainly may help to explain why there are so many amazing porcelain paintings of that era on the market today that are not signed! So the question remains: Can we honestly and accurately attribute this piece to one of the Old Master's? It is thought by many that most of the famous artists of this era signed their art work on Porcelain (China). For example, Bischoff did not always sign his watercolors or oils but presumably always signed his porcelain paintings. The same holds true for Franz Aulich and Leykauf, although it is debatable whether some of Leykauf’s earlier work is unsigned (see last picture). In contrast, one famous painter that did not always sign her work (e.g. attributed by provenance), and in fact produced porcelain paintings very similar to this piece, is May E. Reynolds Judson (also referred to as ‘Mae Reynolds’). Unfortunately, there is not as much known about her as other Master Artists of this era. However, her work, as well as other famous painters of the time, was published quite often in the early 1900’s Keramic Studio magazines. She, like Franz Aulich, taught her china painting classes in the famous art studio building located at 115 Auditorium Bldg, Chicago, Illinois (see 2nd to last picture). She studied under Dukeneck, Meakin, and other notable artists. She later opened an art studio for china painting in Chicago and was well-known by many (also see ‘Classical Gems of Educational Art Treasures, Volume Four for more information & examples of her work). Interestingly, Reynolds frequently painted yellow roses against a “wiped out shaded” palette similar to this piece being offered. The subject matter, as well as the naturalistic feel and true artistry of the piece, certainly speaks of her work. If you visit the Ann Cline Studio website (see my "Favorite Links") you will find several unsigned and signed examples by this famous artist. In particular, the print 'May Reynolds -Yellow Roses #25R regular', available for sale on this site looks shockingly similar to this piece when viewed up close with respect to the subject matter, detail of the brush strokes, the layout of the composition, and most importantly the painting style. Despite that it is unsigned, this work can stand solely on its own merit from an artistic point of view. The clean and precise brushstrokes of pure color give great clarity to the artwork. The distribution of color is rich yet possesses the delicacy of nature. The graceful delineation and tender treatment of each rose, bud, leaf and stem provides a warm naturalistic feel. We especially like the natural detail of the single rose on the left, whose petals have long fallen off, leaving behind only its soft stamen and foliage. The gentle fading of the wild yellow roses into the shadowy background of subtle grays, greens, and a hint of soft violet, produce a wonderful three-dimensional effect to the piece. The radiant glow of light bouncing off one rose to the next brings the painting to life. The composition and artistry is of absolute perfection and the attention to detail is equally as impressive. We are very grateful to be able to offer such an original and exquisite late 19th Century Hand Painted piece in our Fine Art of Limoges Collection to the most avid porcelain collectors and to all lovers of art! Note: We have priced it at $15,000 based on the quality of the piece which is the obviously the work of a true artistic genius. Clearly this masterpiece would be priced significantly higher if it had been signed by one of the Old Master painter's such as Reynolds, Aulich, Bischoff, Leykauf, Fry, Putzi, or Stewart. We welcome the opinions and constructive criticism of any art experts, china painters, and porcelain collectors who may have knowledge concerning this piece or those who have studied the work(s) of the most notable porcelain artist(s) of the late 19th & early 20th Century.
